Feeling tired but wired? Can't get to sleep at night. It may be that you are high on the adrenal hormone cortisol, which is produced by the body in response to chronic stress. The more stress of daily life the more cortisol our adrenal gland excrete. If this pattern continues long term we can develop with Adrenal Fatigure, low cortisol levels and adrenal output, commonly known as burn out, which can take many months to recover. The need here is for restorative adrenal herbs, Licorice, Rhodiola, Withania, Siberan Ginseng too name a few important ones. And of course to make some lifestyle changes, a diet with good protein levels to support adrenal hormone output, Vitamin C, Vitamin B. Include in diet plenty of wholegrains, fresh vegetables and fruit. Magnesium for muscle relaxation and production of melatonin the sleep hormone.
Restorative Yoga practices includes breath awareness, focusing on calming the nervous system and energising the body with prana (energy), meditation practices and relaxation. Regular practice daily can be of significant benefit, doing a short practice to fit in with your schedule can improve anxieity and reduce panic attacks.
If you are suffering from insomnia, early or late onset, follow some good sleep hygiene. Use the bedroom only for sleep or sex. Read or relax before bed. Avoid caffiene or alchool at least 4 hours before bed. Use herbal teas of chamomile or passionflower before bed. If you can't sleep after 30 mins, get up and do something else quietly and then go back to bed. Good night and have a great sleep.
