The winter bite is definitely here at the moment, visits from Jack Frost in the morning, sub zero temperature’s down the line. I have had my kids off from school this week and there friends have had some time off too, winter has taken hold, as is the winter bugs we expect at this time of the year. Many of these bugs, are upper respiratory tract viruses, when we get a virus we often suffer a runny nose, nasal congestion, cough, and or a mild sore throat. When symptoms first appear, natural remedies work there best, you can use a variety of supplements to support your wellbeing, they may reduce the symptoms and duration of the illness. It is important not to suppress the symptoms, and to rest. Much understated the rest thing, many of us will suppress the symptoms with pharmacy medication and continue on, you are better to rest up now, have an early night or day off, than continue on until you have many days in bed.
Vitamin C and Zinc are too of the best well known supplements, a daily vitamin C, at least 15mg per day for an adult will help to support immunity. Vitamin C can be taken in larger does, 2000-6000mg per day through out the day, remember it is water soluble and easily excreted out of the body. Up your intake of fruits, citrus and kiwifruit rich in vitamin C. My herbal favorite’s include, Echinacea, Olive Leaf and Andrographus and Elderberry at the onset of winter illness. Get healthy herbal drops for Colds and Cough, relieves congestion in the upper airways and supports the immune system to fight virus. Foods high in caratonoids, orange and red vegteables and grean leafy vegetables provide betacartone a form of vitamin A, this is used expecially to support health of the mucosa.
If symptoms persist they develop into a bacterial infection, mucus will change from clear to green or yellow, fever may develop, body aches and extreme tiredness. For bacterial infections, antibiotics can be used or you can use herbal support, herbs such as Golden seal, Piccorhiza, Sage and thyme can be used. Using herbal expectorants such as horehound and other lung tonics to ease the lungs and ensure that we can effectively bring up the mucus from the chest.
If you are feeling unwell and require contact a medical herbalist or myself we can formulate a remedy to best suit your needs. The homeobotanical remedies I use in my practice known as herbal drops, can be mixed and matched to your symptoms. They are safe to take by all members in the family, and can be taken frequently through out the day as indicated by symptoms. As a special offer with mention of this article, purchase 1 premade formula at $20 or 2 for $30. If you require an individual script with mini consult the herbal drops are $25 per bottle. There is nothing I have not been able to treat with the herbal drops, so try me, what can I help you with today. Always remember to rest, keep warm at home and in your clothing. A little bit of fresh air and some winter sunshine are always great too.
